Happy Labor Day, USA

August 31st, 2008

Labor Day is tomorrow. I had a difficult time explaining to my son why he didn’t get to go back to school on Monday (yes, get to go back - he really is enjoying it!), mainly because I didn’t know what exactly the Labor Day holiday is celebrating.

Well, I’m not much of a parent if I don’t try to learn these things to tell him.

Seems Labor Day is celebrated as a workingman’s holiday. All those dudes in the 1880’s working in the labor unions needed a day off, and so in 1994 Congress made it a federal holiday.

That’s my 5-year-old version, and I’m sticking to it! If anyone has any neat trivia, or a site aside from Wikipedia that gears it towards kids in a fun way, I’d love to see it!
